There has always been a debate as to how often an oil filter change is necessary, and there always will be a debate because, well, it depends.

How often to change oil filter. The main thing is to change the filter every time you change the oil. A general rule of thumb is 5,000 miles between oil changes but this will vary based on vehicle age, usage, and manufacturer requirements. If you're changing your oil more frequently than necessary, it won't help your car.

Some cars can go two oil changes for every one filter — but even if the manual says that’s ok, it’s not always the best choice. This causes the filter to become clogged more quickly, leading to a loss of drive. Still, some cars might only require full synthetic oil changes after 7,500 to 10,000 miles.

Typically, that means every 10,000km for a petrol car, or every 15,000km for a diesel. The air filter is often one of the easiest, cheapest filters to change and can often be done with few or no tools. The denser the filter, the more often it should be changed.

The lower side of change intervals is often recommended for older vehicles at between 5000 and 7500 miles, especially if there are leaks, and because older engines can burn more oil due to wear and tear. Most parts and oil manufacturers, however, say to replace oil filters with every oil change, which should occur every 3,000 miles or three months (whichever comes first). If you own something relatively new and drive at an average rate, you could possibly get away with an oil change only once a year.

Meanwhile, older vehicles are likely. Regardless of whether you use synthetic, synthetic blend or conventional oil, don’t skimp when it’s time for an oil change. Changing a vehicle's oil only requires a few specialized tools to get the job done, including something to remove the oil plug, something to remove and replace the oil filter, and something to add.

The engine will last longer if you keep the oil clean. However the main point here is that this risk can be managed and does not require you to discard oil after a single use, if cared for properly. Either change oil and filter at 12,000 miles.

However, car experts now say that the standard oil change interval of every three months — or every 3,000 miles (4,828 kilometers) — is old news, and that most cars can travel quite a bit farther before needing the oil replaced. If you live in a very dry climate, the rusting activity will be significantly less than in a high humidity area, so the oil change interval is less important. If a clutch isn't applied properly, it will slip more than it should, causing more debris to get into the fluid.

This results in a significantly less abrasive oil in the engine, which leads to a better chance of reaching full tbo. Simply filtering the oil on a daily basis can help extend the life of the oil by removing solids that contribute to the degradation of the oil and will help minimise the water content. Car manufacturers often suggest changing oil filters every other time you have your oil changed.

Most owners' manuals say to replace the oil filter every time you change the oil. You should replace your oil filter every time you carry out an oil change. To understand why, let's take a look at what the filter does, and what happens if you don't change it.

You might have a relative, neighbor or friend who tells you that they go even longer between oil filters — maybe a year or more. The average interval to change this filter is around 6,000 to 10,000 miles, or every other oil change, depending on the manufacturer recommend mileage interval. Change the oil and filter both, right then!

In almost all cars oil pump is volumetric, gear type. The difference here being that a sudden filter blockage may be repaired with an oil flush and a new filter. Filters are given a minimum efficiency reporting value (merv), which ranges from 1 to 16, although ratings of 6 through 12 are best for.

I change the fuel filter every 250 hours or so. From page 455 of your owner's manual (see source): The rules have changed with the tech of the last 50 years.

Changing your engine’s oil filter is one of the most important and critical maintenance items on your car. Newer models tend to fall into the 6,000 miles + category. It's usually 50 hours or so, but i change mine more often.

Sooner if it looks dirty. How often do you need to change your oil filter? By changing oil more frequently, you remove the rust with the oil.

The next filter change that is important to your vehicle is the fuel. In fact, it's a good idea to change your oil filter every time you get your oil changed. Sometimes i change it after 25 hours of operation if i've been mowing in dusty conditions.

The rule of thumb for most vehicles, however, is to change your oil after at least 5,000 miles. If you look in your vehicle’s owner’s manual, you’ll probably see a recommendation that you change your oil at certain intervals based on months and miles, and you may find that the manufacturer recommends you change the filter every other oil change. Or change oil and filter at 12,000 miles and change oil at 6,000 miles.

Every car is different, but most require an oil filter change between every 3,000 and 6,000 miles. To make it a little easier for you, here’s a brief rundown of.
